Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has called for Clare to remain within the Ireland South Euro constituency, which includes all of Munster, for next year’s European Elections.

“Ireland will be getting two additional seats, following the reallocation of the seats that would have been filled by the UK.  This will require a revision of the constituency boundaries,”Deputy Carey explained.

“There are numerous possible outcomes, but I would be concerned at any proposal that would move Clare into the Northwest.  There are currently three constituencies and any move to a four-constituency scenario would be likely to push Clare into the Northwest.”

“With the uncertainty arising from Brexit and with complex issues such as renegotiation of the CAP to be dealt with by the incoming Parliament, I believe that it would be preferable if Clare remained in the South constituency.  Clare, historically, culturally, socially and from a sporting perspective associates with Munster and and has a particularly important economic relationship with Limerick.  We have a lot more in common with these areas than with Donegal, Longford or Louth,” he said.
