Carey secures confirmation of funding for flood defence scheme for St Flannan’s College area

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has today received confirmation that funding has been made available for a flood defence scheme for the St Flannans College area.

Following representations, Deputy Carey had raised the issue with Dr Martin Manseragh, Minister for State at the Department Of Finance.

Deputy Carey said:

“Last year, St. Flannan’s and the area surrounding it suffered from the damaging effects of flooding to a scale not witnessed in living memory. Unprecedented damage was done to property and houses with access to the area closed off and disrupted for days. I wish to welcome this announcement today that funding has been allocated for these essential works.

The image of flood waters spilling over the perimeter walls of St.Flannans College will live long in the memory. Last year highlighted the need for immediate flood relief works in this area.

I am delighted that Minister Mansergh has confirmed to me that funding has now been secured. This money will go towards the construction of an overflow weir and over 1,000 linear metres of culvert to by-pass the existing swallow hole located to the rear of St. Flannan’s College. My understanding is that Clare County Council is currently assessing tenders for this work and they will appoint a consultant by the end of November 2010, with construction work to be completed in 2011.

I hope that these works will now ensure that a repeat of the scenes we saw last year can be avoided and I look forward to Clare County Council advancing these works to construction phase as soon as possible.”

REPLY.Following a request from Clare County Council, OPW has agreed to put the Local Authority in funds so that they may design a flood defence scheme for the St. Flannan’s College area. The proposed solution effectively involves the construction of an overflow weir and over 1,000 linear metres of culvert to by-pass an existing swallow hole located to the rear of St. Flannan’s College. Clare County Council is currently assessing Tenders for this work and hope to appoint a consultant by the end of November 2010, with construction work to be completed in 2011.
