Funding has been allocated to Clare County Council from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to improve the N19 approach road to Shannon Airport.

Following a recent parliamentary question to Transport Minister Shane Ross, Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has been informed by TII head of regulation and administration Gary Lynch that the deficiencies on the Shannon Airport road predate its classification as a national road in 2016.

“Prior to that date, TII had no remit or responsibility for the section of road in question. However, in the period following its designation as a national road, TII has undertaken a programme of road safety inspections.

“As a result of these inspections, a national road grant allocation has been provided this year to Clare County Council to progress planning work on an improvement scheme on the section of the road concerned,” Mr Lynch said.

Stating that the issue had been raised by former Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy, Deputy Carey said that the road provided access to the airport for several local businesses and he hoped the County Council would be in a position to get the improvement work under way as soon as possible.
